Regional Overview
Nara, locally known as Naro, is the largest taluka of Sindh province, located in the east of Khairpur Mirs district, covering an area of 11,611 square kilometers. It comprises 7 union councils and 58 dehs, with Choondko as its main town surrounded by nearly 10,000 sq. km. The region, a unique blend of fertile agricultural land and vast desert, has a population of approximately 160,985, with a literacy rate of only 40%.
Despite having 315 government primary and elementary schools (including 52 for girls), 6 government high schools, 35 SEF schools, and 10 private schools, access to quality education remains limited, especially for girls, and there is an urgent need for colleges for both boys and girls. Vocational training facilities exist, such as centers run by Golden Hands Of Sand Dumes Org.
The employment ratio is just 35%, reflecting the lack of opportunities and the prevalence of unskilled labor. Local industries include OMV Kadanwari, Sawan Gas Field, Nara Flour Mill, Kingri Cotton Factory, and smaller setups like crush plants, ice factories, and Engro dairy farms. Healthcare facilities are modest, with 2 RHCs, 5 BHUs, 1 medical center (MCH), dispensaries, and a few private hospitals.
To uplift the region, there is a pressing need for investment in higher education, vocational and industrial training programs (such as mechanics, electricians, welding, tailoring, fabrication, carpentry, and social field work), and the provision of qualified female teachers. Addressing these gaps can transform Nara's human resource potential into sustainable socio-economic growth.
